597,841. Glass-melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST. GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Sept. 3, 1945, No. 22574. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1944. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A gas or electrically-heated glass furnace is divided by. a partition 10 into two compartments 11, 12, each of which communicates with its own fining zone 2, 3 which is electrically heated -by electrodes 6, 7 and is generally similar to the apparatus described in Specification 597,838. Each compartment may have more than one fining zone communicating therewith and the compartments may be of different sizes. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the compartments 20, 21 form the legs of a U-shaped furnace. Different coloured glasses or glasses of different characteristics can be made from a common melt by adding appropriate colouring or other agents in the compartments or in some instances in the fining zones.
