Abstract

599,957. Glass-melting furnaces. GLACERIES DE LA SAMBRE. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28766. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1944. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In the continuous manufacture of glass, the metal from the smelting furnace, before reaching the working chamber, passes through a heated refining pan and a series of cooling compartments, whose atmospheres are separate from that of the refining pan and whose length is such that only a small temperature difference occurs between the inlet and outlet of each, whereby convection currents therein remain weak. Two cooling compartments 8, 9 are shown, interposed between the refining pan 4 and the working zore 7, a heat insulating jacket 17 being provided for the compartments 8, 9 and a similar jacket 18 for the working zone 7. A rolling mill is shown at 16. The glass, leaving the furnace 2 by an opening 3 below the region disturbed by the fusion of the batch, passes in a thin layer over a barrier 6 where it is heated by a gas burner 5, by an electric heater, or by a current of hot gases; a further burner 19 may be provided in the arch at the opposite end of the refining pan. The glass leaves the bottom of the refining pan by an opening 10 and passes over a barrier 11 at the inlet end of the compartment 8, the communications between compartments 8 and 9, and 9 and 7 being similarly arranged. The barriers 6, 11 &c. may serve as stills or weirs, depending on whether the immediately following glass level is higher or lower than the top of each barrier. Parallel sets of cooling compartments may be arranged to feed several working zones from a single refining pan.
