Abstract

640,281. Electric glass-melting furnaces. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Aug. 11, 1947, No. 22283. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1946. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A glass-melting furnace has a premelting chamber 11 communicating through a submerged throat 13 with a combined melting and fining chamber 12, submerged electrodes projecting up through the bottom of the two chambers being arranged in straight-line rows along those side walls of the furnace that are parallel to the passage afforded by the throat 13. The heating potential applied to each electrode is regulated by a controlling reactor R and electrically created convection currents in the combined melting and fining chamber 12 are caused to circulate in a direction transversely of the general direction of glass flow and also in a manner moving surface glass from the fined to the unfined end thereof. The combined melting and fining chamber 12 is in turn connected through a submerged throat 15 to a small working chamber 16 heated by resistor elements 30 arranged above the glass.
