Abstract
653,847. Making glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. March 10, 1948, No. 7368. Convention date, April 21, 1947. [Class 56] [Also in Groups XI and XII] Glass is made by introducing the batch into a bordering portion of a molten bath of glass at a rate to meet withdrawal requirements by exceeding the maximum rate at which it can be melted by combustion heat alone and heating the material of the bath by joule effect in a transversely localized area well within the lateral confines of the bath and solely adjacent such bordering portion to supply the combustion heat deficiency and create a flow of molten glass through such area toward the bordering portion to cause the newly melted materials to flow forward around the ends of such area. The tank has batch feeding openings 8, 9, and melting and fining compartments 11, 12, separated by a bridge wall 13 with a throat 14. Fluid fuel is supplied through the burner openings 15-18 and air inlet and waste outlet ports may also be provided. Electrode element groups 21-24 project through the bottom of the tank and are arranged in a row transversely of the tank and terminating below the metal line 10. The electrodes are fed by transformers T<SP>1</SP>-T<SP>3</SP>, and the current densities between the groups are controlled by the direct current saturable core reactors R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>3</SP>. The spaces between the end electrodes and the respective side walls are at least as great as the space between the electrodes. of a row, which latter space is equal to at least twice the diameter of the electrodes. Suitable dimensions for a furnace are given in the description.
