[Also in Division H5] A furnace for melting glass has a melting zone 1, a throat zone 2, and a working zone 3, each zone being independently heated by horizontally arranged electrodes at least four of which 9 are disposed in the upper half of the melting zone, at least three, 10, heat the throat and also extend into the melting zone and at least one pair of the electrodes 11 are arranged below glass level in the working zone, which also has resistance heating elements 12 located above the glass level. Partition 4 is partly water-cooled and the furnace is charged at 5 and heated by burners, the combustion products of which leave by chimney 6. Glass is abstracted manually at 7.
