Abstract
531,880. Electric melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST. GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Sept. 7, 1939, No. 25249. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1938. [Class 30 (iii)] In a glass melting furnace in which the glass flow is from charging openings 2 to a discharge opening 3, electrodes 6, 6a extending across the glass flow form a hot zone close to the surface in the melting portion the width of which is from 75 to 125 per cent. longer than the width of the hot zone in the fining portion which is provided with electrodes 9, 9a. The partly formed glass is shown at 4, and 5 and 8 are the hot zones created at the melting and fining portions respectively. In a modification, the electrodes may be formed by a number of vertical elements. In Fig. 7, the melting portion is divided into two branches 10. 10a each with a charging opening 2 the glass streams flowing together at 11 and traversing the fining zone 8. The three electrodes may be connected to a three-phase supply, more energy being expended in the melting zone than in the fining portion. Specification 500,803 is referred to.
