Abstract
884,330. Gas-fired radiant heaters. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. April 14, 1960 [April 21, 1959; July 22, 1959], No. 13348/60. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). [Also in Groups XI and XXIII] A hollow heat radiating or absorbing element 10 comprises a corrugated front wall 12, a rear wall 20 and side walls 18 and 22 formed with recesses 28 engaging tongues 34 of a clip 30 secured to a furnace structure. The front cavities 16 have acute-angled apices and the elements are prepared from fine silica and clay by slip casting and firing to give an emissivity of at least 50%. The elements are gas-fired internally or may have electric resistances disposed along said apices. They may be disposed in the roof and hearth of a continuous glass annealing furnace with a rollerway conveyer, Fig. 7 (not shown), or in the side walls of an annealing furnace through which glass plates are traversed in a vertical plane, Fig. 8 (not shown). Metallic elements through which water is circulated are disposed on either side of a ribbon or sheet of glass being drawn vertically from a bath of molten glass, Fig. 9 (not shown).
