Abstract
1,028,652. Furnace walls. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd. Feb. 7, 1963 [Feb. 7, 1962], No. 4749/62. Heading F4B. A furnace has side walls formed individually of heat-reflecting partitions mounted in spaced relationship, said spaced relationship being maintained by heat-insulating material and said partitions being held together as a unitary structure. A furnace for heating sheets of glass to be toughened has side walls 1 of which at least one is removable comprising heat-reflecting portions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 spaced at 1 to 2 inch intervals in a rigid frame 9, containing heat insulating refractory material 8, at their lower ends and similarly in a frame 10 at their upper ends. The frame 9 is mounted on a refractory foundation 15 and has a refractory roof 16, the aperture 17 of which is closed by pneumatically-operated sliding members 18. The foundation is protected by a replaceable tile 20. The partition 2 extends inwardly to the vicinity of the aperture 17 and supports by means of refractory bodies the electric heating elements of nickel-chrome strip. The furnace may alternatively be heated by the injection of hot air or combustion gases. In a modification of the invention, Fig. 3 (not shown), the material to be treated is transported through the furnace by a vehicle on rails, end walls with spaced partitions being movable to close the end openings. The partitions are spaced by an insulating, refractory material and they may be corrugated to increase their rigidity.
