Abstract

645,843. Electric heating elements. ISOPAD, Ltd., and REIK, H. Aug. 26, 1947, No. 23517. [Class 39(iii)] An electrically-heated flask or retort mantle 1 comprises several pads 7 of glass wool enclosed by an inner cover 4 of glass fibres and an outer cover 8 of glass fibres or other material. Heating elements 5 are secured to the surface of the inner cover 4 that is adjacent to the pads 7. When the mantle is shaped to the desired form, the heating elements 5 are energized to fuse the surrounding glass wool and, on cooling, a crust 13 forms that is relatively resistant to deformation. The inner cover 4 has a higher melting temperature than the glass wool pads. A top mantle 2, constructed in a similar manner to the lower mantle 1 but not necessarily subjected to a crust forming process, is divided into lobes 17, 18 enabling it to be slipped about the neck or necks of a flask. The heating element 5 is preferably a resistance wire wound about an asbestos core and surrounded by glass or asbestos. Large mantles have several independent heating elements. Relays can be used in conjunction with thermo couples for automatic heat control. The outer cover 8 can be treated with protective paint or it may comprise a metallic or other enclosure functioning as a stand.
