Abstract
542,324 Crucibles. LEWIS, E. C., and STONE & CO., Ltd., J. July 2, 1940, No. 11135. [Class 39 (iii) ] Crucibles or pots employed for melting magnesium or magnesium-base alloys are protected from external deterioration by a surrounding container b. The exterior of the pot a is formed with grooves to receive the tubes d for the heating medium, which may be an electric resistance. The remaining space g is filled with a good heat conductor such as an iron cement, or a mixture of sodium silicate and iron filings. The bottom of the pot may be heated by a similar heater d. which is pressed into contact with the pot by an adjustable ring l. The heating element may be divided into lengths extending around half the pot a, each having its own terminals and each may be controlled by a thermostat. The ends of these lengths extend into slots n in the container b, the open ends of the slots being connected by plates o. The parts are assembled in an inverted position, so that the container b presses the tubes d into contact with the pot a. In case of breakage of the crucible, molten metal flows into the cement-filled space, and no explosion occurs.
