Abstract

452,810. Making glass silk. DYKES, W. U., 75, Chancery Lane, London.-(Mount, P. H. A. ; 49, Langegasse, Vienna) May 3, 1935, No. 13225. [Class 56] Relates to the method of making glass silk in which the thread of glass 8 is drawn directly from an aperture 2 in a furnace 1. According to the invention, the conical portion 7 of glass which protrudes through the aperture is reheated in order to maintain it at a temperature higher than, or at least equal to, the temperature of the glass 3 in the furnace. The furnace 1 may be heated by any suitable means, such as electric heaters 4, 5, and is preferably surrounded by a lagging 6 of heatinsulating material. The cone 7 of glass may be heated by radiation from a heater 9, and a screen 10 is provided to shield the glass thread 8 from the radiated heat. Preferably, the furnace is so heated that the temperature of the contained glass 3 increases as it approaches the aperture 2. The thread 8 is drawn away by a rotating drum or other suitable device.
