Abstract

1373087 Electrolytic purification of copper and tin NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Dec 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 58554/70 Heading C7B Tin and/or copper present in a molten mixture with iron are concentrated by passing an electric current between the mixture and a fused slag in contact therewith and cathodic with respect to the mixture, thereby inducing transfer of iron from the mixture into the slag. The electrodes may be formed conventionally, i.e. with a bottom anode contacting the molten mixture; or anode and cathode may be arc or plasma electrodes, each contacting the slag with the mixture forming a bi-polar electrode. The mixture may be obtained by smelting with fluxes and coke in an electric furnace which furnace may also be used for the refining as per the above method.
