Abstract
1312378 Electrolytic furnaces MONTECATINI EDISON SpA and G DE VARDA 30 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 31513/70 Heading H5H To prevent freezing of the bath 6 of a multicell electrolytic aluminium furnace a cathode 3 extends into the aluminium collecting pit 2 in the furnace bottom so as to provide good thermal and electrical conductivity between the cathode 3 and the vat bottom through aluminium collecting in the pit 2. As shown the cathode 3 is provided centrally in a furnace with a stepped bottom between terminal anodes 8 and bipolar electrodes 5. The distance between the end of cathode 3 and pit bottom 9 is such that even immediately after tapping the residual aluminium engages the cathode. The cathode being of carbon is a good thermal conductor and therefore heats the aluminium in pit 2. If the lower layers of the bath 6 are subjected to cooling during electrode renewal, furnace starting or current interruption, the heating of cathode 3 is increased by disconnecting some of the iron current supply bars 10 by means of switches 11 from the cathode, so that the resistance of the iron-carbon interface increases and the cathode 3 and hence the aluminium in pit 2 is heated more.
