Abstract

1368891 Electrolytic cell ALUMINIUM CO of AMERICA 17 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 12665/72 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell for producing molten metal, such as Al or Mg, is provided with elongated magnetic flux conductor members so arranged as to reduce or eliminate within the cell a component of a magnetic field arising from current connecting conductors which are external to the cell without substantially affecting the other magnetic field components within the cell. Thereby, circulation of molten metal within the cell is reduced or stopped. As shown in top view, a cell 12 for producing molten Al from a fused salt bath is electrically connected in series with similar adjacent cells 10 and 14. Cell 12 comprises a steel shell 16, insulating lining 20 and carbon liner 18. It is provided with anodes 25 (shown only for adjacent cell 14) and iron or steel current collector bars 30 embedded in the liner 18. Current collector bars 30 are connected externally of the cell by bus conductors 31, 32 to main cathode buses 33, 34 which connect with main anode buses 28, 29 of the next cell. In use of the cell, the current connections give rise to a magnetic field. A vertical component thereof within the cell is reduced or eliminated by means of rows of magnetic flux conductor members 36, 37, 38, 39, 41 and 42. These members are elongated, extend vertically and are magnetically spaced. They may be of scrap iron or steel. The magnetic flux conductors 37 may be attached to the cell shell 16 by insulating adhesive or by tack welds. Any oxide on the flux conductors serves as magnetic spacing. The flux conductors 38, 39, 41 and 42 are embedded in the liner 18.
