Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture metallic Mg with high current efficiency by adding MgO to a molten salt based on MgF2 and LiF followed by DC electrolysis under specified electrolytic conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Anodes 3 made of carbon and cathode 4 made of mild steel, cast iron or the like are vertically arranged in electrolytic cell 1 lined with Al2O3 brick, and Al2O3 partition walls 2 are placed between the electrodes. A mixed molten salt consisting of MgF2; 40W75 wt% and LiF; 25W60 wt% is charged into cell 1, and MgO is added in an amt. corresponding to the electrochemical equivalent. This molten salt bath is heated to 800W950°C, and electrolysis is carried out at a voltage of 3W6 V, a cathode current density of 2W10 A/cm2 and an anode current density of 0.5W0.8 A/cm2. The mixed fluoride bath is hardly electolyzed, and the MgO alone is electrolytically reduced to manufacture metallic Mg with very high current efficiency.
