Abstract

PURPOSE: To decrease electric resistance and improve electric power efficiency by using a composite electrode body consisting in embedding a projecting part of iron material into graphite material as an intermediate electrode and electrolyzing magnesium chloride.
CONSTITUTION: Intermediate electrode bodies 19 which are made electrically one piece by embedding projecting iron materials 8 of iron plates 14 into graphite plates 7. The surfaces of the iron plates 14 of such bodies 19 are used as cathode and the graphite surfaces of the graphite plates 7 as anode and these are placed to face each other and are disposed in series on an electrode support base 20 placed in an electrolytic bath cell 15. DC current is applied to cathode plates 18 and an anode plate 17, and molten magnesium chloride is electrolyzed, whereby magnesium is obtained.
