Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the productivity per installation and lower the basic unit of electric power by disposing in one row plural intermediate electrodes constituted of composite bodies having graphite anode parts and iron plate cathode parts between respective pairs of anodes and cathodes.
CONSTITUTION: Plural intermediate electrodes 15 consisting of plural composite bodies of iron plades 13 and graphite plates 14 are disposed between an anode plate 9 and respective cathode plates 10, on an insulator made supporting base 16 placed in an electrolytic cell 7. Gaseous chlorine and metallic Mg are produced not only from the electrodes 9, 10 but from the electrodes 15 as well. Part of the electrolytic bath in an electrolytic chamber 17 is transferred into a cooling chamber 18, where it is cooled in the molten state to increase density and sinks in the bottom part of the chamber 18, thence it is returned again into the chamber 17 by passing through a conduit 19, whereby convection is formed. The molten metallic Mg is flowed out from a conduit 25 by being carried on this convection and the gaseous chlorine is discharged from an exhaust hole 27. On the other hand, MgCl2 is introduced from conduit 26 into the bottom part of the cell 7.
