Abstract

668,691. Fused-electrolyte apparatus. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 27, 1950 [April 27, 1949], No. 10421/50. Class 41. A fused salt electrolysis cell having refractorylined steel side walls and a steel bottom, is characterized by a graphite anode wholly enclosed within the cell and in electrical contact with the bottom which is insulated from the side walls and from ground. As shown, the cell is cylindrical and has a centrally-located graphite anode 1 surrounded by an annular steel cathode 2 which is supported by arms 3. The anode is supported by a steel base-plate 4 formed with a socket 5 and provided with a flange 10. The socket 5 has a boss 6 with a tapered pin 7 on which the anode fits, a space being provided between the anode and the socket which is filled with metal 32. The metal is molten during normal cell operation. A vent channel 17 permits contraction and expansion of the molten metal with changes of temperature. Refractory insulation, for example, asbestos, fills the space between the top of the molten metal and an annular refractory plate 8. The side walls of the cell are formed by a cylindrical steel shell 11 provided with openings for the arms 3. The shell is supported on insulating refractory bricks 33 located within the flange 10, and cement 12 is placed between the shell 11 and the anode and between the shell and the flange 10. The shell is lined with refractory brick 13. It is in two halves fastened together by flanges 18 and bolts 19 after the cathode has been set in place by cement 20. Electric busbar 22 is connected by bolts 23 to the base of the anode socket 5. Bus-bars 24 are fastened to the arms 3 by bolts 30. Specifications 238,956. [Class 41], and 519,814 are referred to.
