Abstract
165,052. Ro´boul, M. de. June 16, 1920, [Convention date]. Resistances furnaces.-Relates to the producticn of fine filaments of refractory minerals, such as alumina and silica. The minerals employed are fusible above 1700‹ C. According to the invention, the minerals are fused in an electric furnace consisting of a open crucible b, Fig. 1, composed of refractory oxides, for example Zirconium oxide 60 per cent, Yttrium oxide 15 per cent, Thorium oxide 5 per cent, Erbium oxide 20 per cent. The crucible is first heated, so as to render it conductive, by carbon resistances d and then the main current is passed through it by means of leads c.
