Abstract

190,657. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 27, 1922. Pyrometers.-In a thermo-couple consisting of elements such as tungsten and molybdenum for measuring temperatures up to about 2000‹ C., the couple consists of rods 4, 5 moulded together at one end 6 and packed in a comminuted highly refractory protective material such as carborundum, magnesite &c. The outer surfaces of the rods are preferably first oxidised and the rods and protecting material are packed in a carbon tube in which they are fired up to a temperature of about 2000‹ C. The couple is then removed from the furnace and the protective sheath is then filled or coated with a material such as zirconia to reduce porosity. The coated material may then again be fired. The couple is connected to a millivoltmeter &c. which is preferably so arranged that the needle will indicate only when the tungsten acts as the positive element, i.e. at temperatures above 1050‹ C.
