Abstract

1,161,910. Ceramic compositions. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 April, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 19613/67. Heading C1J. [Also in Division H1] The element of a Nernst-type lamp which consists of a ceramic body containing 48-93 mol per cent zirconia mixed with 10-20 mol per cent calcium oxide and/or 7-52 mol per cent yttria is subjected to a process which makes it electrically conductive at room temperature, the process comprising the steps of heating the element in an oxygen-free chemically inert atmosphere to a temperature of 1000-1200‹ C., passing a direct current through the element to heat it further to at least 1600‹ C., maintaining this temperature for sufficient time to electrolyse the element, and cooling the element in the inert atmosphere. During the electrolysis oxygen ions migrate through the element into the atmosphere so that on cooling the material remains an electronic conductor.
