Abstract
568,469. Glass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PARTRIDGE, J. H. July 2, 1943, No. 10775. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] A glass of low thermal expansion (e.g. between 0.8Î10<-6> and 1.5Î10<-6> per degree centigrade) which in founding is maintained at nearly 2000‹ C. for 24 hours or more is composed mainly of SiO2 and Al2O3 to which a small percentage of an alkaline earth oxide is added. Barium oxide is the preferred oxide ; not more than 1¢ per cent, and preferably only “ per cent, is used. 10 to 15 per cent of the SiO2 may be replaced by boric oxide. The addition of the BaO appreciably increases the electrical conductivity of the glass at 2000‹ C. which reduces the power necessary for the heating which is carried out in part by the passage of current through immersed tungsten electrodes and in part by oxy-coal-gas flames playing over the surface of the glass. The furnace is lined with zircon blocks. Specifications 463,889 and 467,362 are referred to.
