Abstract

7103. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. March 21. Boron oxides.-An oxide of boron containing 15 per cent of oxygen is obtained by effecting the reduction of boric anhydride at a temperature above 1,250‹ C. Magnesium is used as the reducing-agent, and the heating may be effected in an electric arc or resistance furnace, for example, that described in Specification 20,809 / 04, [Class 39, Electric lamps &c.]. A gas furnace may be used, a sufficient mass of the material being taken to allow a rise in temperature above 1,250‹ C. in the mass of material. The product is ground, treated with water, and then with sulphuric or other mineral acid, and the product finally washed and dried. The compound so obtained may be used in the treatment of copper preparatory to casting as disclosed in Specification 25,031/10.
