Abstract
571,442. Decarburizing iron. HURST, J. E., BRADLEY & FOSTER, Ltd., BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., and HANCOCK, P. F. Dec. 21, 1942, Nos. 18123/42 and 1434/43. [Class 72] Iron powder is produced by heating an intimate mixture of cast iron in tinely-divided form and iron oxide at a temperature of 750- 1100‹ C., the time of the treatment and the proportions of the ingredients of the mixture being such that the carbon content of the iron is reduced to a very low value and substantially the whole of the oxide is reduced to metallic iron. The reaction and the subsequent cooling of the product may be carried out in a controlled neutral or slightly reducing atmosphere or atmospheric air may be excluded during these processes. Specification 484,662 is referred to.
