Abstract

The additive for making ferrochrome and similar alloys or steels is a pelletised mixture contg. chromium and iron carbides, free carbon, unreacted oxides of Cr, Fe, Si, Mg, Al and Ca, and at least small amounts of impurity oxides, and having a coating of hard oxides of Si, Mg, Al, Ca, Cr and Fe contg. low amounts of impurities wherein the proportion of SiO2 in the pellet is 20-45 wt.% and the amounts of MgO, CaO and Al2O3 are given by R = (1.0 MgO +0.72 CaO)/(1.0 Al2O3), where 1.3 = R =2.0. The hard flux coating makes the use of inert gas during the firing of the pellets unnecessary since air does nor penetrate significantly to the carbon.
