Abstract

715,829. Gunpowder compositions. BOWDEN, F. P., and BLACKWOOD, J. D. Oct. 1, 1952 [Oct. 2, 1951], No. 22967/51. Class 9(2) A black powder containing a 70 per cent carbon charcoal, sulphur, and a nitrate, e.g. potassium nitrate, contains a small proportion of a metallic salt which reacts with hydrogen sulphide to remove the hydrogen sulphide as it is formed during burning of the powder. Suitable metallic salts are those of lead, e.g. lead acetate, or iron, e.g. ferric or ferrous sulphate. Five per cent lead acetate or 0.5 per cent ferric or ferrous sulphate may be added to black powder consisting of 75 per cent potassium nitrate, 15 per cent charcoal (70 per cent carbon) and 10 per cent sulphur.
