Abstract

A process for the production of high speed steel powder suitable for powder metallurgy which comprises preparing a ferrous alloy having a carbon content substantially in excess of that desired but being otherwise of the required composition, mechanically disintegrating the solid alloy to powder form and decarburizing the powder in the solid state to produce high speed steel of desired carbon content. The initial alloy may contain 1.5-3.0 per cent carbon and the decarburized alloy may contain 0.5-0.8 per cent carbon. The initial alloy in a molten state may be subdivided by granulation before reduction to powder and the granulating step may be followed immediately by a heat treatment involving heating and quenching to enhance the brittleness of the material, for example heating to at least 1000 DEG C. and quenching in water or oil. This treatment may be followed by heating at 580 DEG C-610 DEG C. and cooling normally without quenching. Specification 484,662 is referred to.
