Abstract
515,004. Surface hardening steel. BOCHUMER VEREIN FUR GUSSSTAHLFABRIKATION AKT.-GES. May 18, 1938, No. 14833. Convention date, June 8, 1937. [Class 72] Steel articles are surface-hardened by immersing them in a metal bath having a melting point which is higher by at least 50 ‹C., than the usual hardening temperature of steel, and when the surface zones have reached the hardening temperature subjecting the articles to accelerated cooling, e.g., by quenching in water, oil or air, the process being carried out in such a manner that no change in the composition of the article takes place and the core of the article is unaffected. The bath may be composed of molten bronze or cast iron.
