[Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Castings; chills and denseners.-Cast-iron lathe-bed rails, or other articles requiring a hard surface are made of grey iron cast in such a way as to render said surface dense and then locally heated by a burner and cooled. The iron may be die or centrifugally cast or cast in a sand mould containing chills or denseners. If iron containing total carbon 2À5 to 3À5 per cent., combined carbon 0À4 to 1, silicon 0À9 to 2À5, manganese 0À3 to 1À3, sulphur 0À06 to 0À15, and phosphorus 0À2 to 1À2, with or without nickel 1À25 to 5, is used in casting lathe-bed rails, the chills should be 1“" deep, equal in width to the rails, and arranged in short lengths end to end but slightly spaced.
