Moulds; casting processes. - Uniformity in structure of an iron casting having parts of unequal thickness, is obtained by regulating the rate of cooling of said parts. The rate of cooling of thin parts of a flywheel e, Fig. 2, propeller g, Fig. 3, or other article may be increased by the introduction of molten metal, heated blocks or heated gas into recesses c, Fig. 1, or f, Fig. 2, in the mould or by forming air spaces i, Fig. 3, in the mould adjacent said parts. The rate of cooling of thick parts may be increased by the use of chills h. The desired result may also be obtained by preheating sections b<1>, b<2>, b<3>, Fig. 1, of the mould to different temperatures or by using damp and dry sections or by both these methods.
