Abstract

384,367. Casting composite articles. MATTHEWS, E. F., Elm Cottage, Watford Road, Wembley, Middlesex. Aug. 27, 1931, No. 24150. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1930. [Class 83 (i).] In casting copper alloy or other metal of low melting point on to a body of iron, steel or other metal of high melting point the iron is preheated to such a temperature that its expansion per unit length is equal to the contraction per unit length of the first metal on solidification and cooling to room temperature. After equalization of temperature of the compound body there should be no irregularity in the contraction of the second metal due, for instance, to passing the critical point. To avoid such a possibility the critical point may be raised, as by reducing the carbon content or the constitution of the alloy may be varied. Moulds.-Two steel shells 1, 2 are heated to about 700‹ C., combined with a core 3 and molten bronze is poured through a runner 4, 5. Undercut recesses may also be formed in the solid body if desired.
