Abstract
Piston rings are made by casting an alloy of the composition: - carbon 2.5-3.5%, silicon 1.5-3.0%, manganese 0.4-0.7%, phosphorous 0.2-0.5%, sulphur less than 0.06% and the remainder iron preferably into individual sand or chill moulds, the rings being white as cast and their peripheries slightly off circular, annealing for one half to two hours at 860-930 DEG C., quenching in a hot bath at 300-500 DEG C. in which they are kept until their structure is completely converted into bainite and then heating above 500 DEG C. without destroying the bainite structure. In a modification the annealed rings may be cooled in air to 50 DEG C. above the 300 to 500 DEG C. bath, and then proceeding as above. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements: chromium less than 0.35%, molybdenum 0.4-0.8%, nickel 0.4-0.8%, vanadium up to 0.2%, copper up to 0.7%.
