Abstract
A method of manufacturing cylinder linings comprises chill casting a cast iron containing 2.0-3.5% C., 1.0-3.0% Si, 0-1.5% Mn, 0-0.4% Cr, 0-2% Ni, 0-1.0% Mo, 0-0.5% P, 0-0.3% S and the balance Fe, adding, prior to casting, one or more of the elements Te, Bi, or B to suppress the formation of graphite and heating the casting to decompose the ledeburitic cementite and form temper carbon in a pearlitic-ferritic matrix. The amount of Te, Bi or B added may be between 0.007% and 0.009%. A water spray may be used to cool the mould and the lining may be removed therefrom at a temperature of 800-1000 DEG C., transferred to a kiln furnace, and maintained at 800-950 DEG C. for 2 to 5 hours. After cooling, the lining may be machined and heat-treated.
