Abstract
A process for the manufacture of piston rings comprises (a) stack casting the rings in a sand mould from a cast iron having the following constituents, 3-4 per cent C; 1.5-3.1 per cent Si; 0.6-1.5 per cent Mn; 0.8-2.0 per cent Cu; 0.05-0.7 per cent P; 0.02.-0.15 per cent S; 0 to 0.05 per cent Tc. (b) heating to produce austenite and quenching to form martensite; (c) heating to 420-550 DEG C. to produce graphite nucleation; (d) heating for graphitizing at a temperature above the end of the entectoid transformation and cooling in still air; (e) tempering to adjust the final hardness. The austenization may be at 760 to 920 DEG C. followed by quenching in oil, or the quenching may be carried out in two steps, the first to a temperature just above the start of the martensite transformation and the second to a temperature at which the martensite transformation is complete. The rings may be machined and then heated for 5-7 mins. at 5803C. while the ends are held apart. Specifications 738,094 and 742,400 are referred to.
