Abstract
A process for the treatment of white cast iron comprises austenisation at a temperature slightly above that at the end of the eutectoid transformation, step-quenching to produce martensite without shrinkage cracks, reheating to a temperature in the range 430-530 DEG C., depending on the composition of the metal to produce nuclei of graphite, and graphitisation at a temperature above that of the eutectoid transformation followed by cooling in still air. The step-quenching may comprise quenching in a salt bath at a temperature above that of martensite formation for a time less than that which produces transformation to bainite followed by cooling in still air. A sand casting may be heated at 810 DEG C., quenched in a salt bath at 180 DEG C. for 1 minute and cooled in still air, reheated at 450 DEG C. for 48 hours, cooled, and finally reheated to 895 DEG C. for 14 hours and cooled in still air. For chill castings the graphitising may be at 875 DEG C. for three hours.
