Abstract

1449052 Cast iron moulds; heat treatment BRITISH STEEL CORP 20 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 8367/73 Headings C7A and C7N [Also in Division B3] A cast iron ingot mould 1 incorporates graphite in a matrix which has a predominantly pearlitic structure in the region 10 surrounding the cavity 5 and a predominantly ferritic structure surrounding the region 10. The ferritic region may be at least three times as thick as the pearlitic region 10 and contain up to 40% by volume of pearlite. The region 10 may contain up to 40% by volume of ferrite. To promote the formation of vermicular or spheroidal graphite, Mg, Ce or Ti or a combination of some of these elements or soluble nitrogen may be included in the molten iron for casting the mould. As shown, a mould 1, covered by a square iron slab and standing on an annular iron slab 3 in an electric furnace 2, is heated above the A 1 temperature to anneal the outer region to ferrite while cold air passes from a pipe 7 through the cavity 5 to outlets 8, 9. The cast iron has the following constituents; - C 3À75, Si 1.50, Mn 0.75, Mg 0.013, P 0.030, Ce 0À006 and S 0.015 and, initially, the matrix contained 85% pearlite, the remainder being ferrite, while the graphite was 85% of vermicular form. After heating for 20 hours, the outer ferrite region is three times as thick as the region 10. The mould 1 then cools for 12 hours before removal from the furnace 2. In an alternative method, the same metal is cast in a sand mould and the resulting ingot mould is allowed to cool to 850‹C, 150‹C above the A 1 temperature, so that the matrix is 80% ferrite. The sand in the cavity is then removed to allow the region 10 to cool more rapidly. After the outer surface is below the A 1 temperature, the ingot mould is removed from the sand mould and allowed to cool. The outer, ferrite region is found to be four times as thick as the region 10. Cast iron chills may be used in the mould cavity, after the sand removal, to give a thicker pearlitic region 10.
