Abstract
1,149,461. Moulds for glass. W. H. MOORE and C. A. GREEN. 16 Aug. 1967, No. 37585/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Division B3] A cast-iron mould for shaping glass, e.g. into bottles, is made by measuring the chill value of a bath of molten cast-iron, adding a modularizing agent to increase the value 10- 75% and then casting the iron in a mould having a chill, e.g. an iron or steel casting, at a position corresponding to the working face of the glass-shaping mould so that it has a layer 11 comprising graphite in nodular form adjacent the chill and another layer 14 comprising flake graphite. The nodular layer 11 may be spaced from the face 10 of the glass-shaping mould but this surface is machined in any ease so that the final face has the layer at the surface. There is a layer 12 comprising undercooled graphite between layers 11 and 14. The nodularizing agent may be Mg, Ce, Y, La or Nd or other rare earth metals or combinations of rare earth metals, e.g. mischmetal, or magnesium silicon. The casting is annealed to remove carbides, produce the nodular graphite at the surface and provide a ferritic matrix. A pearlitic matrix may be obtained by adding alloying agents such as Cr, Mo, V or Cu. Agents such as Ni and Al may be used. The iron may be graphitized particularly before nodularization by the addition of silicon, calcium silicide or ferro-silicon.
