503,981. Making bearings. RUHRSTAHL AKT.-GES. Dec. 9, 1937; Nos. 34110 and 34111. Convention dates, Jan. 23 and April 21. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Casting processes.-Bearings and axle-boxes, subject to high stresses, are made by casting highly carburized haematite iron, containing 1À6 to 3À5 per cent of silicon, in chill moulds or in moulds having chill plates to chill the metal at the bearing surface. The chilling action is regulated, if necessary, by heating the chill so as to obtain, at the bearing surface, a zone of finely graphitic texture and hardness practically equal to that of bronze. In the case of a bearing bush having a small bore for instance, the inner bearing surface may be given the desired hardness by chilling from the outer wall. If the desired hardness does not extend quite to the inner surface the innermost zones may be removed after casting.
