Abstract
A process for obtaining an easily soluble scale on mild steel articles comprises heating the articles to a temperature between 700 DEG C. and the A3 point of the metal being treated and cooling quickly. The articles may be maintained at the high temperature for 10 to 20 minutes and then cooled to below 200 DEG C. at a rate of 10 DEG C. per minute. The treatment is stated to produce a scale of ferrous oxide which is easily soluble in pickling solutions.
