Abstract
<PICT:0964821/C6-C7/1> Metal (e.g. stainless steel) strip 20 is cleaned by passing it from an annealing zone 10 where it is scoured with an atomized spray of molten salt, e.g. NaOH and NaNO3 and/or NaCl, in an inert carrier gas, e.g. super-heated steam, at about 1000 DEG F. from nozzles 32, oxidizing gases being excluded from the spray zone, and quenching the cleaned strip, e.g. with steam at 250 DEG F., the strip being passed through the cleaning zone under tension and out of contact with any guiding or supporting means capable of abrading or scratching the surface thereof.
