Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize preferable continuous annealing of steel strip depending on the purpose, by constituting a cooling section of a direct cooling part, which forms a primary quenching mechanism, and of an indirect cooling part, which is composed of contacting rolls, both parts being exchanged suitably in order to cool the strip. CONSTITUTION:A strip S having passed through a heating zone 8 and a soaking zone 9 installed in a furnace 10 and having been recrystallization-annealed is cooled in a cooling part 12 and is delivered to a pickling tank 13. The cooling part 12 is equipped with upper rolls 32a, 32a which are movable upward and downward. When the rolls 32a, 32a are moved upward, the strip S is passed directly from a guide roll 12b through cooling water. When the rolls 32a, 32a are moved downward, cooling water is discharged and the rolls are brought into contact with the strip S as cooling rolls. Hereby the contact area is changed suitably depending upon the degree of downward motion of the rolls 32a, 32a, and the cooling rate and the temp. at which cooling is completed are selected at will. Suitable exchange of upward and downward motion of rolls 32a, 32a permits to carry out smoothly a series of treatment involving overaging without detracting high speed of the continuous annealing apparatus.
