Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of quenching crack, by quenching the outer surface of the steel pipe with wall thickness less than 20mm at two or more zones, and by controlling the quenching temperature through the flow rate control for the water. CONSTITUTION:The steel pipe 5 with wall thickness less than about 20mm is heated by the heating furnace 1 to above the austenizing temperature. This steel pipe 5 is passed through the quenching head 2 being divided into two or more zones 2' and is continuously quenched. At the first zone 2', the steel pipe 5 is quickly cooled until the outer surface temperature reaches the Ms point, and at the second zone 2', the pipe 5 is cooled until the inner surface temperature reaches the Mf point, preventing the outer surface temperature from being cooled to under Mf -50 deg.C. That is, the cooling is controlled so as to make small the temperature distribution in the direction of thickness at the martensitic transformation range. According to this method, the unevenness or degradation of quality of material due to the minglement of imperfect quenched structure, are excluded, and the quenching crack is perfectly prevented.
