Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a forming roll improved in the energy effect, line rate and roll performance, by carring out suitable heat treatment on a high C and high Cr steel for a roll to reduce the magnetism.
CONSTITUTION: A high C and high Cr steel is used for a roll, and it is subjected to suitable high temperature hardening to permit residual austenite of 20% or more to remain. Thus the magnetism is reduced as a whole, and therefore under the influence of high frequency magnetic field for heating a joining section of a steel pipe from a steel sheet, the elevation of temperature and energy loss due to the induction of the roll itself can be decreased. Generally, the quenching will be carried at about 1,080W1,250°C, and the cooling is carried out by controlled quenching such as cooling in oil, hot bath quenching or the like, but the risk of decomposition of the austenite during cooling is less due to the austenite stabilized by heating at high temperature. The aimed amount of residual austenite can be provided by controlling the heating temperature of quenching, the retention of the time and the cooling rate. Since said decomposition is accompanied when tempered, the tempering should be about 500°C or below, but the change in the hardness due to it is not significant.
