Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled roll without loosing abrasion resistance and heat shock resistance by a method wherein steel with a specific composition containing C, Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, Mo, V is subjected to surface hardening by induction heating and, subsequently, to tempering.
CONSTITUTION: Steel comprising 0.7W1%, C, 0.8% or less Si, 0.8% or less Mn, 0.8W0.9% Ni, 3W4% Cr, 0.2W0.6% Mo, 0.01W0.1%V and the remainder of Fe and impurities is subjected to surface hardening by induction heating. That is, a steel roll is heated to a predetermined hardening temp. by induction heating over a part from a roll surface to 35W46mm in depth and, thereafter, cooled at a speed faster than a critical cooling speed or more by water spraying hardening. Thereafter, tempering treatment is applied thereto. Thereby, forged steel roll having high hardened depth of which Shore hardness after treatment is Hs 90 or more in a range from a roll surface to 35W46mm in depth is produced.
