Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the uneven properties in tool steels based on the difference in cooling rate at the time of cooling the heat-treated tool steels in a cooling chamber, by circulating an in-furnace gas selectively in a forward direction from above to below and a backward direction from below to above for the tool steels and the coolers on both sides thereof. CONSTITUTION:At the time of heat treating tool steels in a nonoxidative atmosphere heating furnace consisting of a heating part 10 and a cooling part 2, first the tool steel is preheated and held at 800-900 deg.C by the heater 9 in a heating furnace of a vacuum atmosphere, and further the temperature is raised to 1,000-1,100 deg.C, after which the atmosphere is substituted with an N2 gas or inert gas atmosphere and tool steel is subjected to regular heating for 10-30min at 1,200- 1,300 deg.C. Following to this, the tool steels I-V are put into the cooling part 2 between coolers 3, 3' consisting of the heat exchangers in the cooling chamber 1A, where they are cooled by changing over the downward direction circulating flow of the in-furnace atmosphere gas by a fan 5A and the upward direction circulating flow by a fan 5B at every fixed time. The temperature gradients in the upper and lower part of the tool steels are eliminated and the entire part are uniformly cooled; therefore, the defect that material quality assumes uneven structure is eliminated.
