Abstract

Oxide is removed from the surface of iron and steel articles by immersion in a hot solution consisting, apart from minor amounts of such substances as activators, of water, hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride there being at least 10 gm. of the latter per 100 ml. of solution. Preferably the acid concentration is between 16 and 37 per cent by weight of HCl, the temperature between 70 DEG and 75 DEG C.; whilst the solution may be saturated with ammonium chloride. The treatment is applicable to carbon steels, "stainless" steels, molybdenum steels, tungsten steels, chromium steels, nickel steels, and chrome-vanadium steels. The ammonium chloride apparently acts as inhibitor and also as passivator since the cleaned steel surface after washing shows little tendency to reoxidize immediately. Treated surfaces may be vapour-, chemical-, or electroplated.
