Abstract
A process of descaling ferrous billets comprises heating the billets to an intermediate temperature e.g. 1900 DEG F., coating the billets with a dry flux, heating to working temperature e.g. 2300 DEG F. and descaling with e.g. high pressure water jets. The flux used may be a mixture of 33-67% of a glass and 67-33% of NaCl, KCl or BaCl2. The heated billets are rolled over a bed of powdered flux and then heated to 2300 DEG F. in an induction furnace in 5-15 minutes. Instead of water sprays descaling may also be carried out with rotating wire brushes. <PICT:1061806/C6-C7/1>
