Abstract

1294379 Continuously heat treating steel rod CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES 19 Oct 1970 [17 Oct 1969] 49529/70 Headings C7A and C7N Steel rod issuing from the final stand of a hot mill is rapidly cooled to a temperature below that corresponding to the nose of the transformation curve, and is then reheated to approximately the temperature corresponding to the nose, the rod remaining austenitic throughout and the reheating being completed before transformation commences. The rod is then isothermally transformed to ferrite and pearlite or cooled at such a rate that the transformation is complete. As exemplified a 0À6% carbon steel leaving the hot mill at 950‹c was cooled at 800‹c/sec to 300 - 500‹c, and reheated at 200‹c to 550 - 650‹c. Suitable apparatus includes a series of water cooling units 9, 10, 11 followed by reheating furnace 12. The rod is then looped and cooled in loop form.
