Abstract

1,207,462. Cooling steel wire. SCHLOEMANN A.G. July 10, 1968 [July 12, 1967], No.30909/68. Heading C7N. Hot, patentable steel rod leaving the last stand of a rod mill is surface quenched to about 70‹ C. above the martensite transformation temperature in each of a number of successive quenching stages, the surface being allowed to reheat after each quenching stage by conduction from the centre zone of the rod, so that the rod enters the pearlite transformation zone while temperature compensation is still occurring and with an average temperature of 600-650‹ C., the temperature of the rod surface being raised above the upper bainite temperature before transformation begins. The rod is reeled when a substantial peripheral zone thereof is transformed to pearlite. The apparatus may comprise a series of at least three cooling units, water and air coolers being arranged alternately, the cooling effect of the water coolers decreasing in the direction of rod travel according to a logarithmic decay and the air coolers increasing in length according to a logarithmically increasing series, the overall length of the cooling units being equal to the product of the rod speed and a time of 0À6 to 0À7 seconds.
