Abstract

A method of treating steel comprises heat treating the steel to effect a phase change or a change in the physical structure of the steel and then effecting a reduction in cros-sectional area while the steel is at a temperature between 200 DEG F. and the lower critical temperature of the steel, the steel being non-austenitic and capable of strain hardening or precipitation hardening at the temperature of cold working. The heat treatment may be austempering, hardening by quenching from above the austenizing temperature, martempering, normalizing, or annealing. The reduction in area may be obtained by a drawing operation e.g. passing the steel through an extrusion die, carried out at a temperature between 450 DEG F. and 900 DEG F.
